An in-school residency program that pairs a teaching-artist with a group of students for the semester. In these sessions, students will be exposed to Florida State Standards supported lessons through various forms of creative writing activities with a primary focus on poetry and prose. With instructional methods informed by culturally relevant pedagogy as well as John Hattie’s (2017) high-yield strategies that bolster student achievement, the lessons will occur weekly for 10 weeks and culminate in a poetry reading and published chapbook of the students’ work. Through these data informed lessons, that supplement the individual learning communities goals and the teacher’s instructional focus calendar, each resident artist - through collaboration with the teacher and students - creates a unique learning experience that engages students while lending elements and strategies to their toolbox as learners.
